Gunmen Blow Up NPDC Gas Pipeline In Delta


Gunmen on Thursday blew up a gas pipeline belonging to the Nigeria Petroleum Development Company (NPDC) in Ighwrenene community, Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta state.

The attack on the pipeline which caused a massive explosion is second in four months.

Industry expert says the attack which affected a major trunk line would further caused serious gas shortage nationwide.

Local source told our correspondent that the incident occurred around 1:50am on Thursday with heavy explosion which threw the community into panic.

"At about 9am yesterday, officials of the NPDC and Delta State Fire Service were seen battling to put off the fire due to the bad terrain where the incident occurred.

The source said some journalists who rushed to the scene could not get access to the location due to it waterlogged nature, a development which also made fire fighters seen helplessly as their trucks and vans were stocked kilometers away from the point of the explosion.

Official of NPDC who crave anouymous said; “We are making attempts to switch off supply to the line, but till that happens, we are helpless and can’t gain access to the point of explosion owing to the flooded terrain of the road.

Although, no group has claimed responsibility for Thursday’s incident, militant group, Urhobo Gbagbako had in the past claimed responsibility for similar explosions including that of April 3rd at Ighwrenene community.

Ugo Atugboko, NPDC's Manager, External Relations could not immediately confirmed the incident.

Nigeria have being battling insufficient gas supply to boost its electricity supply nationwide due to the activities of vandals.

With the incident, the nation would be  thrown into more shortage as the damage affected a major truck line that feeds the nation power generating plants.
