Otuaro Urges Ijaw Students To Be Good Ambassadors

The Deputy Governor of Delta State, Deacon Kingsley Otuaro has urged Ijaw Students to remain focused in studies in institutions of learning so as to be good ambassadors not just of the Ijaw nation and the Niger Delta but any where they are.

Otuaro, who was represented by Mr. Emeka Osuji, his political aide, gave this admonition, yesterday, at the Ijaw Cultural Day Celebration organized by the President Edibi Akeme-led National Union of Ijaw Students (NUIS) of the Anwai-Asaba campus of the Delta State University (DELSU).

Invitees at the occasion chaired by Mr. Julius S.Apodor, Director of Maintenance, Ministry of Housing, Delta State, were treated to the rich cultural heritage of the Ijaw people including masquerade dance, tug-of-war contests among others which drew ovations from especially the non-Ijaw guests.

Delivering lecture titled “Is our culture collapsing or growing in tertiary institutions?”, Dr. Miebi Gbigbi, a DELSU don, said where “Nigeria Institute for Cultural Orientation (NICO) created platform for Nigerians to speak and use their indigenous languages in all facets of national life”, many Ijaw students ignored speaking their language”.

Aligning with Mahifouza, who he said sees “language as the most important attribute of a nation”, Dr. Gbigbi urged the Ijaw students to be proud of their culture by promoting same in events such as cultural day celebrations in school.
